As REALTORS®, our members pledge to follow the REALTOR® Code of Ethics, a standard that goes beyond what is required by law. Through our participation in the California Association of REALTORS® Statewide Professional Standards Program, BAOR members and consumers have access to resources designed to resolve disputes, address ethics concerns, and maintain the integrity of the REALTOR® profession.

Ombudsman Program

The Ombudsman Program is often the quickest and easiest way to resolve concerns before filing a formal complaint.

An Ombudsman is a trained REALTOR® volunteer who works with parties to facilitate communication, answer questions, and help resolve disputes informally. Many concerns can be successfully addressed through this confidential process without the need for a formal hearing.

Recommended First Step: Request Ombudsman assistance before filing an Ethics Complaint or Arbitration Request.

Ethics Complaints

The REALTOR® Code of Ethics establishes the professional standards expected of all REALTORS®.

If you believe a REALTOR® has violated the Code of Ethics, you may file a formal Ethics Complaint through the California Association of REALTORS® Statewide Professional Standards Program.

Professional Standards hearings are designed to determine whether a violation of the REALTOR® Code of Ethics has occurred. They are not court proceedings and cannot award monetary damages, cancel contracts, or revoke a real estate license.

Before filing a complaint, we encourage you to review the available resources and consider utilizing the Ombudsman Program.

Arbitration Requests

Arbitration is available for certain disputes involving commissions, compensation, procuring cause, and other monetary disputes related to real estate transactions.

The arbitration process provides an alternative to litigation and allows eligible disputes to be resolved through a structured hearing process.

Arbitration requests must meet specific eligibility requirements outlined by the National Association of REALTORS® and the California Association of REALTORS®.
